Louvre Abu Dhabi is proud to announce its next major event of the 2022-2023 cultural season, the international exhibition titled "Bollywood Superstars: The History of Indian Cinema." This exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Quai Branly Museum - Jacques Chirac and France Muséums, will take place from January 24 to June 4, 2023.
This exhibition is a unique opportunity for visitors to discover the depth and richness of the art and civilization of the Indian subcontinent through its long tradition of image creation and the diversity of its film industry. With over 80 works ranging from photographs, textiles, graphic arts, costumes, and film clips, the exhibition will explore the history of Indian cinema, from the earliest films of the late 19th century to the present day. The works come from prestigious collections such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Quai Branly Museum, the Army Museum, the National Museum of Asian Arts, the Al Sabah Collection, the Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation, and a private collection.
The exhibition is curated by Julien Rousseau, heritage curator, and Hélène Kessous, PhD in social anthropology and ethnology. Dr. Souraya Noujaim, head of conservation and collections at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, provides support.
India is currently the world's leading film producer, with over 1,500 feature films made in multiple languages, distributed in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The exhibition will allow visitors to discover how India used new image distribution technologies such as lithography and photography to become a leader in cinema. From early films to Bollywood musicals, visitors will better understand Bollywood's international success and the diversity of the Indian film industry. The exhibition covers a variety of forms of narration, themes, and influences, ranging from pre-cinematic dance to Hindu religion and mythology, to the creation of a Bollywood star system.

Press Release Tokyo, Japan - The Sumida Hokusai Museum presents a one-of-a-kind exhibition, "Hokusai at Play with the 100 Poems", from December 15, 2022 to February 26, 2023. This exhibition highlights the 100 Poems Explained by the Nurse of Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, as well as other works related to these poems. Hokusai is best known for his series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," which includes the most iconic work of Japan, "The Great Wave." However, the 100 Poems collection from the Sumida Hokusai Museum is equally remarkable and will be exhibited with 23 paintings. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the "Ono no Komachi" in oban nishiki-e format, which shows the peak of Hokusai's career in 1835. The Hundred Poets, Hundred Poems, an anthology of waka poems, was a part of general education in the 18th century in Japan. Hokusai used this anthology to express his unique vision of the world by creating the 100 Poems Explained by the Nurse. The prints reflect Hokusai's own ideas, as well as the traditions and conventional images associated with these poems. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents the exhibition "Joan Miró: La réalité absolue, Paris 1920-1945," from February 10 to May 28, 2023, under the direction of curator Enrique Juncosa. This exhibition chronicles 25 years of the artist's exciting career, from his beginnings in magic realism to his constellation of signs language. During this time, Miró was fascinated by prehistoric art and sought to reclaim its original spiritual meaning. He is considered a pioneer of abstract expressionism and conceptual art for his formal innovations in the context of the first avant-garde, including Dadaism and Surrealism. The exhibition showcases the artist's evolution, from his first trip to Paris to his Constellations from 1940-1941, and his series of white background works that reinforce his floating sign language on ambiguous backgrounds. Miró's interest in prehistoric art is clearly evident as he expresses in his notebooks, where he asserts his ambition to reclaim the original spiritual meaning of art. Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs celebrates the art of hair and body hair in Western society through a spectacular and sophisticated exhibition titled "Hair and Hairs." This exceptional presentation, which will take place from April 5 to September 17, 2023, is a thrilling journey through over 600 works, ranging from the 15th century to the present day.
The key themes in the history of hairstyles are examined in detail, highlighting the trades and know-how of yesterday and today. The exhibition explores how arrangements of hair and body hair have participated for centuries in building appearances and conveying important messages about femininity, masculinity, and beliefs.
The tour is divided into five distinct themes, beginning with the study of the evolution of women's hairstyles as a social indicator and marker of identity. The second theme, "Hair or No Hair?," examines the history of facial hair and different masculine and feminine modes throughout the centuries. Facial hair is studied from the Middle Ages to its reappearance in the early 19th century, and its resurgence among hipsters at the turn of the century.
The following themes include "Modes and Extravagances," which examines the most extravagant hairstyles and boldest styles in history, and "Challenges and Subversions," which studies how hair and body hair can be used to express political and social convictions. The final part of the exhibition, "Hair and Society," examines how attitudes towards hair have evolved over time and how they reflect cultural norms.
