The Oitavos surprising modernity in a natural setting

Breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, natural dune landscape this is the setting when we arrive after a 20 minute drive from Lisbon at the brandnew five star luxury hotel The Oitavos on the Quinta da Marinha Estate in Cascais on the Estoril coast. Set amidst umbrella pine trees and dunes The Oitavos is a surprisingly modern construction of glass and painted steel, with on one side the spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and on the other The Oitavos Dunes, one of the world’s greatest golf courses,. The hotel’s contemporary design, pure, with sleek lines and glass walls allowing natural light to flow in, draws the attention to the beautiful outdoors. The rooms are exceptionally spacious and equipped with the latest technology, while contemporary sculptures and paintings by young Portugese artists give it a personal twist.

Hotel guests also have access to the full destination spa and the choice of three gastronomic restaurants at the Oitavos, as well as the natural links championship golf course Oitavos Dunes, the Health and Racket Club and the Equestrian centre on the Quinta de Marinha Estate. Nature, architecture, design, gastronomy and a wide variety of activities, all combined to make a stay at the Oitavos an experience of contemporary luxury in a sublime natural setting.

A family affair

Quinta da Marinha dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and is closely linked to the history of the Champalimaud family. After discovering a perfectly unspoiled stretch of land on Portugal’s Atlantic coast near the fishing village of Cascais, the family embarked on a vision to create the area’s premier venue for leisure travel, dining, business and social events of exceptional quality. Now, eighty years later, the family has transformed the estate into a leading resort in the greater Lisbon area. The hotel also provides great facilities for conferences and meetings, featuring a conference centre for up to 300 people and several meeting rooms, spacious, comfortable and benefitting of natural daylight. The meeting rooms are equipped with the latest technology and  technical support is provided

Bold design and elegantly simple interiors

Inspired by the timeless beauty of the Atlantic coast, architect and decorator, José Anahory, designed this vast glass and painted steel construction, yet  light and transparent, allowing natural light to flow in and focus on the spectacular outdoors. Built in a Y-shape, the 142 guest rooms, including the 16 deluxe suites, are spacious, ranging from 60 to 135 M2 and all have large private balconies offering spectacular vistas of the Golf Course and the Atlantic Ocean. The rooms are equiped with state of the art technology, design furniture, quality bedding and individual artworks.

The Forte

An entirely private escape built in the heart of the secluded Oitavos Dunes golf course is the hundred square metres suite the Forte. Complete with king sized bedroom, living room, fully equipped kitchen, private swimming pool, sundeck and personal butler service.

My personal experience:

The hotel has friendly staff, outstanding room views and amazingly spacious rooms. I like the way the glass walls were used to integrate the outdoors and allow natural light to flow in as well as the wide variety of quality sports facilities. Small b- minor, that the hotel lacks colour with a modern grey theme throughout. The glass wall for the shower and toilet set in the main bedroom area are not always ideal for room sharing. The hotel deserves a longer stay to fully benefit of all the Spa and sporting facilities, as well as getting used to the dimensions, somewhat overwhelming when you first visit the hotel. Maybe not suitable for people who seek cosiness and intimacy but an ideal place to recuperate in an elegant relaxed atmosphere.
