Mondrian Soho: fantasy meets sophisticated chic
Love St Martin’s Lane and The Sanderson in London? Well you’ll be rather pleased to note that Morgan’s Hotel Group has recently opened a new New York hotel: The Mondrian SoHo, the brand’s downtown Manhattan debut on Crosby Street.
Anxiously-awaited by insatiable luxury-hotel fans, the glimmering glass Mondrian SoHo tower officially opened its doors March 1. It's the the Morgans Hotel Group's third Mondrian hotel in the country. While most art-historians would think Dutch painter Piet Mondrian inspired the design, it’s the vision of design guru Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz (of Mondrian Los Angeles, not to mention the outrageous homes of celebs like Lenny Kravitz and Sean Combs), who was inspired by Jean Coucteau’s 1946 French fantasy film “La Belle et la Bête”.
Fantasy meets sophisticated chic
It's as if you've stepped into a modern fairy tale world, when entering via a lush topiary façade, you will find a powder blue lobby with a pale oak floor and eclectic seating groups with whimsical furniture by Noriega. The 270-room hotel includes four suites, each featuring a terrace and a grand Penthouse on the 25th floor with two terraces, one of which boasts a prime view of the Empire State Building. Saturated blue corridors with custom carpet adorned with a rose vine design provide the entryway to the elegant jewel-box rooms featuring dramatic mirrors, marble, chrome, angelic white beds and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Innovative culinary concepts and nightlife
At the Imperial No. Nine, the Mondrian’s destination restaurant, Chef Sam Talbot introduces his sustainable seafood concept. In keeping with Noriega’s dream-like theme, you’ll dine beneath a cluster of crystal chandeliers hanging over a large, mirror topped communal table in the main dining room where you can admire the glass centrepiece sculpture created by artist Beth Lipman. Night owls can order a cocktail at Mister H, a nightlife venue created by Armin Amiri, visionary behind Socialista, with the bar's rich red interior and eclectic collection of Chinese furniture, lanterns and mirrors this is a place that Humphrey Bogart would have visited. A neon sign proclaiming "LOVE, HAPPY, DRUNK" in Chinese letters is summing up the spirit of the bar.
Close to noteworthy destinations including Jill Sander, Saturday Surf Shop, the New Museum and nearby popular areas like Greenwich village, Lower East Side and Chinatown,The Mondrian SoHo is ideally located in the midst of the lower Manhattan coveted SoHo neighbourhood and adds a unique style of hospitality, nightlife and entertainment to the rich cultural landscape of SoHo.
