Each year, it attracts millions of domestic and international cultural visitors to the city, making New York City one of the hottest Cultural Capitals of the World. Here is a quick review of what is to come.
Keith Haring: 1978 –1982
One of the most famous American artists from the late 20th century finally has a major exhibition on his early work. This incredible graffiti artist was one of New York's great underground figures and a close friend of Basquiat. This new exhibition includes 155 works on paper and videos and over 150 archival objects. A great way to rediscover the man who painted Necker's Children Hospital's fresco in Paris.
Diego Rivera: Murals for The Museum of Modern Art
The Mexican painter Diego Riviera comes back to MoMA, 80 years after his first exhibition, with five portable murals, freestanding frescoes with bold images addressing the Mexican Revolution and Depression-era New York that were created in the early 30's. These gigantic masterpieces are up to six feet by eight feet in size and weigh as much as 1,000 pounds and are made out of frescoed plaster, concrete, and steel. A tribute to a major Mexican artist by the museum that already recognised his talent right from the start.
Cindy Sherman
Once again, the MoMA puts up an incredible exhibition for exceptional photographer Cindy Sherman. This American woman not only worked as her own model for 30 years but also worked as makeup artist, hairdresser and stylist. The exhibition collects over 180 photographs of this major artist in contemporary art who altered her physical appearance as well as her surroundings to create a deep emotional impact.
The Steins Collection: Matisse, Picasso, and the Parisian Avant-Garde
The Metropolitan Museum takes you back to the Paris of the early 20's through the Stein's collection. Gertrude Stein, her brothers Leo and Michael, and Michael‘s wife Sarah were important early patrons of modern art in Paris. The Steins developed lasting friendships with Picasso and Matisse in particular and the salons that they hosted at 27 rue de Fleurus and 58 rue Madame are legendary. This exhibition focuses on Picasso and Matisse, as well as their contemporaries including Bonnard, Cézanne, Denis, Gris, and others.
Whitney Museum: Whitney Biennial 2012
It has now been 26 years since the first Biennal was held at the Whitney Museum and it has always been a great way to gauge the current state of contemporary art in America. This 2012 edition will focus on a diverse mix of intergenerational artists working in a variety of media. Multidisciplinary arts will be presented in a large, central performance area within the museum, foregrounding the importance and relevance of these disciplines within the visual arts. The perfect way to get the feel for today's art.
