La Traviata by Opera Mauritius

Buoyed by the success of its first two seasons, Opera Mauritius has more and more opportunities to breathe new life into the Mauritian artistic scene and has become an essential partner of the tourist industry. For its third edition, the Opera Festival Mauritius will stage Verdi's masterpiece, La Traviata

From the beach to the opera, Mauritius has it all

The operas and concerts produced by Opera Mauritius have been hailed by the national and international press and have attracted an increasing number of people. 7.000 persons attended The Pearl Fishers in 2009 and the following year, Carmen attracted 10.000 spectators. This year the Opera Mauritius 2012 edition stages Verdi's superb Opera La Traviata which is set in the "Années Folles", with Mauritian soprano Véronique Zuel-Bungaroo playing Violetta and Michael Kraus and Markus Brück as Germont. This Mauritian production, which brings together Mauritian and international artists, will be accompanied by the Orchestre Régional de La Réunion, conducted by German maestro Martin Wettges. The ultimate occasion to swap your bathing suit for a tuxedo and enjoy this masterpiece in the idyllic setting of the island.

La Traviata

The Italian romantic composer Verdi is unmistakably one of the most influential artists of the 19th century. Inspired by Alexandre Dumas's Dame aux Camélias, La Traviata tells the story of the famed courtesan Violetta Valery, and her complex love story with nobleman Alfredo Germont. Verdi's masterpiece staged in the Années Folles, the second most performed opera after Mozart's Magic Flute, will without any doubt be one of the highlights of the Mauritian cultural season.
