WAM, African heritage

With the help of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, the WAM can finally open its doors and exhibit a wonderful collection of South African art.

The city's new museum

With its glassy front looking out onto the Mandela Bridge, the Wits Art Museum brings something new to the old neighborhood of Braamfontein. The contemporary warehouse style facade doesn't reveal a hint of the incredible collection of fine art it houses. Nina Cohen and Fiona Garson, the winning design team of the national competition, realized this new Center ofSouth Africanheritage thanks to many generous donors such as the Standard Bank. Over 9,000 objects are permanently exhibited, documenting over seven decades of South African history. Artists from the 50's and 60's such as Irma Stern with her oil paintings,  Sidney Kumalo and his bronze sculptures perfectly blend with the more contemporary charcoal drawings by William Kentridge. A Museum to put high on the agenda when visiting the South African capital Johannesburg.
