Miami's Design District, where creativity happens

Miami is a well-known destination for its wonderful sandy beaches and unparalleled nightlife, but it has now also become a true global cultural hub. Fueled by the arrival of Art Basel Miami Beach more than 10 years ago, the city has become a prime destination for art, fashion, and design, and this is only the beginning…

Miami, a new capital for art, fashion and design?

Miami is renown for its highest concentration in the world of preserved Art Deco buildings. Now, major architectslike Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron are making their own footprint in Downtownand Miami Beach. The re-opening of a major museum for contemporary art, the dynamism of the Wynwood art district, and the re-birth of the Design District, are only some indications of how Miami is building its future…

Miami’s Design District is being made over. In a little more than two years, nearly 120 top retailers will fill the compact district, featuring a four-block pedestrian promenade, two department stores, rooftop gardens,  mature shade trees lining the streets, a boutique hotel, condominium tower, five parking garages and many cafes and tree-shaded plazas. For now, at least, the northeast 40th Streetis the center of action, where the permanent stores of luxury retailers like Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, and Dior Homme are nestled beside the temporary locations of Cartier, Prada,  Hermes and the Louis VuittonStore with its artistic façade created by star streetartist RETNA.

Even though the Wynwood has now become the main quarter for art galleries, Bernard Marckowicz is bringing a great art selection to the Design District, with a clever mix of emerging artists and of more renown artists, from Alain Godon, to Yom de Saint Phalle and from Warhol, to Wesselman and Botero. This destination also comes with a few good restaurants; Michael’s Genuine is thelocals’ favorite, a vibrant neighborhood bistro where people gather to enjoy simply-prepared dishes madefresh from local ingredients. Spend the afternoon in the Design District, Miami's hippest zipcode and it will be a day of discovery.
