Comité Colbert: Fighting the Counterfeiting
It is a surprise to no one that the counterfeiting market has grown strongly over the last years. One of the main targets of this black market is of course French luxury goods. As the numbers are becoming alarming, the Comité Colbert is preparing a campaign to get the message out.
A fast growing market
The significant increase of counterfeiting is obviously the result of globalization. Cheaper labour markets now have the means of production to duplicate luxury goods. And the numbers are striking. The loss for the global economy is estimated to more than 1 trillion USD a year! The impact on jobs and tax income is significant, in France alone, up to 40,000 jobs are lost every year, costing the economy around 6 billion euros. An intolerable situation that the legislator is fighting with strong penalties against the consumers and manufacturers.
The Colbert anti-counterfeiting strategy
As an association representing French luxury companies, the Comité Colbert is deeply involved in the fight against counterfeiting. Working hand in hand with the legislator, customs and shipping companies, the Comité is keeping a close eye on every step of the battle. In 2012, the Comité Colbert has launched a new campaign to raise awareness about this crime, that many consumers still consider as minor. All over Europe, posters will carry out a strong message mixed with humor to shine a light on the damage that conterfeiting causes and to educate consumers to make responsible choices.
