Gastronomy and shopping in Buenos Aires

Of course, when we are lucky enough to make the trip to Argentina, one week is hardly enough to visit Buenos Aires. Much less the whole country ! Even one month would not give you enough time to explore its diversified multi-facets, each one very different from the other (Patagonia, Pampas, the wine country with Mendoza…). Luxe Magazine has spotted for you several different, non-comprehensive addresses in Buenos Aires, to be discovered to get a taste of Argentinean cuisine or to do a bit of shopping. Naturally, you will want to complete the list when you are there !

The Tomo

Le Tomo is considered to be one of the best restaurants in the city, and it is ideally located at Avenida 9 de Julio (9 July) not far from the Colon Opera House and the famous Obelisk.
On the first floor of the Panamericano hotel, the Tomo, was recently redecorated by architects from the PabloSanchez Elia and Laura O studio, whose reputation is due to the two sisters Ada and Ebe Concaro, who have been earning awards for over 35 years now. They have skilfully combined the traditional style of the establishment with a real return to the sources of cuisine, suggesting authentic dishes, simple and simply delicious. For example, Italian dishes combine with a rare happiness with seafood, such as these lobster ravioles or even the taste of Argentinean beef or pork, which can not be praised enough, as its reputation has gone far beyond the borders. The atmosphere, in caramel tones is chic and warm, with few tables, to preserve a certain intimacy. You have to taste the « lomo », the beef or pork fillet with its green-pepper sauce and red onions.

La Cabana

A typically Argentinean Restaurant, that has joined the luxurious Orient Express Collection, in the district of Recoleta, a stone’s throw from Park Hyatt. Nestled in a very beautiful historic and aristocratic residence on three stories, a very beautiful terrace is open when the weather is pleasant enough to enjoy dinners under the stars. The ground floor offers a beautiful living room area, decorated in the purest Argentinean style, heavy purple dyes, leather chairs, beautiful lights in wrought iron, wood parquet and several objects, notably saddles or chests that remind us we are in the country of Pampas and its gauchos ! On the floors, several private living rooms, each reflects the typical atmosphere of a different part of Argentina (Pampas, Patagonia, Molinas Campos…) where families get together for intimate dinners.
Here, we can enjoy the famous Argentinean cooking, the Parrila, (barbecue) that heads the lists on the menus.

Oviedo

A beautiful brasserie of Benoît style in Paris, created twenty-five years ago. An elegant place without being too sophisticated. Here you will find the Argentinean style, with, on the menu, a very Hispanic heritage with European influences. Of course, meat comes in all sizes and shapes, and dishes show clear Italian influences.
We definitely have to taste the ceviche, the squid or the red mullet. Much delicacy and finesse in the presentation of the dishes.
When it comes to the Head Pastry maker, Prospero, he is the best in South America. Every two years he takes a refreshing, training course
in Spain too.
The wine list presents the best of Argentinean wines. Many French people, in fact, have settled down in Argentina (Bernard Arnault, Bernard Magrez, the Rothschild Family ….)

Here the prices are more affordable and reasonable than in Europe.

Calma Micha : design

Located in Palermo Viejo, this boutique will definitely please connoisseurs of design. Carpets, BKF chairs, are made out of natural leather and can then be dyed by the owners of the boutique, Carla Bonifacio and Diego Olinik. The products are exclusively Argentinean, and without a surprise a large number of objects made out of cow hide can be found.
Worth seeing !

Jackie Smith : handbags

A boutique of handbags presented on light wood shelves. Clear and spacious; thanks to its design, the shop enables the entire collection to be seen with one glance.

Varnished leather, a mix of colours, the lines are sober or the most extravagant.
Figure on a budget from 150 to 300 $.

Gabriela Tomasini : fashion and accessories

A very beautiful shop that hides an abundance of treasures. Everything is organised according to colour themes and includes jewellery, handbags, shoes, dining table ware and clothes. Much creativity behind the models, rather for cocktails, with several woollen pieces. Very beautiful shoes, 150 $ and up.

Maria Cher : Casual and functional

A beautiful space of 200 m² created by two architects, the Argentinean Edgardo Minond and Mathias Klotz, a Chilean for contemporary clothes, created by designer Maria Chernajowsky.
After having studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, she returned to settle down in Buenos Aires in 2001.
His collections target a rather young, trendy and casual clientele.
A lot of fluidity, clarity, thanks to the large glass bay windows, on both sides of the shop.

Arte Etnico Argentina : carpets and furniture

For the connoisseurs of Argentinean carpets or typical furniture, this address is for you.
Behind a glass door, we go by a nature-filled patio that leads to a hangar where a multitude of hanging chairs, wooden tables and rugs, often unique pieces or faithful reproductions in small series in Santiago de Chile are well explained by the master of the place who knows all too well the history of Argentina.

LasOreiro : trendy and evening ware

A beautiful trendy boutique, in two parts, with some leather creations and evening attire, mainly sexy, stretch satin dresses. If you want to bring back a pretty adjusted dress in a tango-style, then this address is for you.
Here you have very high quality leather, with beautiful jackets and colour coats with a beautiful trench cut.
In the fitting  room, each booth is very cosy, with a velvet padded chair, and a large colour curtain to be at ease

Humawaca : leather goods

In Argentina, you have got to buy leather. It is the ideal place to buy quality leather. Two designers successfully launched, a few years ago, this trademark, their factories being located in Buenos Aires. This took a big dose of ingenuity and creativity and is offered at affordable prices. Each year the timeless collection adds on a few new original pieces. Like this handbag which contains its Ipod cable and on its handle, the buttons to listen its music (200 $.) Beautiful briefcases for PC are also sold at affordable prices (140 $).
Several shops at Buenos Aires.

Maria Vazquez Mode

An original boutique, whose passage you cannot miss with a black area lit with green, punctuated with tree trunks and the singing of birds.

Then, a large loft arranged in a warehouse presents a line of casual, but glamorous clothes on a rack. Like in many shops in Buenos Aires, here we also find some leather pieces, functional and also some evening pieces.
Affordable prices : between 90 $ to 350 $

Just right and Darcos, Magic Shoes : tango shoes

A trip to Argentina would not be complete without a visit and purchase of a pair of tango shoes. A real institution here, you have a wealth of choice. Two addresses caught our attention. First of all, « Comme il faut », in the Récoleta district, real small workshop/boudoir on the floor where you can have shoes made to your size. But don’t worry, you can also buy some, right on site. They have very varied collections, and they will bring you all the shoes that match your size.

If you are in the Palermo district, however, you can go see « Magic Shoes », a shop proposing all kinds of articles connected with the world of the Tango. Clothes and many shoes hanging from the ceiling or on the shelves, that will perhaps find grace in your eyes.
The quality is not the same as that of « Comme il faut », on the other hand, there are many models.

Rossi & Caruso

A beautiful, top-of-the-range boutique, specialised in leather, with a pretty choice of classical boots, handbags, shoes, gaucho knives and some leather clothes. An address visited by the top-of-the-range clientele of Buenos Aires. Opposite the famous hotel, Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt, in an elegant neighbourhood of the Récoleta.
